What was life like in the Roman army? Was it better to be a soldier in the Roman army (rich or poor) than a child? What was life like for a Roman soldier? Roman soldiers, also known as legionaries, were some of the most efficient and highly trained soldiers in the world during the time of the Roman Empire. Legionaries served in the Roman army for 25 years before they could leave. Life as a soldier was hard, with recruits marching up to 20 miles a day, building roads and towns, and training for battle. They were highly skilled builders and fighters.
