Summer 2 

Our topic for this term is... The Classics 

 

In Writing, we are studying the book Alice's adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (Illustrated by Anthony Browne)

 

In our reading, we are looking at complementary texts which all involved a similar theme such as Journey by Aron Becker. 

 

As Geographers, we are studying Rivers that are local to us and comparing them to other Rivers. Did you know there is a small stream 5 minute walk from our School?

Spring 2

This half term, we are looking at our overarching topic of 'Into the Wild'

 

Writing

We are using the book Survivors by David Long to look at the amazing stories of real-life heroes.

The particular story that we will be focusing on is Aron Ralston - The man who cut his own arm off. 

Throughout the term we will be writing:

A first person narrative from the point of view of Aron

A diary entry from the person who finds Aron

An explanation text of a person going Canyoneering.

Reading

Inkeeping with our theme with writing. We will be looking at two different texts which explore the lives of great explorers. This is a great opportunity for Year 5 to look at books that are structured in different ways. 

 

Maths

We have just finished a unit of measurement which including rounding to the nearest 10,100,1000,10000,100000 and 1000000. 

We will now be focusing on the four operations, working on addition and subtraction in arithmetic sessions and multiplication in our main lessons. 

 

We will also look at prime, squared, cubed numbers alongside factors and multiples.

Geography

Our focus is on North America and Las Vegas. We will look at the countries, major cities, tourist attractions and comparisons to where we live. 

We will be answering the question: Is Las Vegas a world away from Waterlooville?

Internet Safety Day 2022

 

As a class, we looked at the theme of 'Fun and Games' and talked about the games that most of us play. 

Most common games were Minecraft, Fortnite and Roblox. 

We completed a task explaining about these games and why someone might like to play them.

 

Look at some of the slides we discussed below:

- We discussed some of the features of online games and what the different features could mean. 

- We looked at the different types of abuse that could happen online (these include: Excluding bullying, cyber bullying and swearing)

- Some people may offer a link to click in a chat. Do not click these as they could be a virus, take you to another adult site or can be used to take your information. 

- Do not accept any trades, usually they are too good to be true. 

Spring 1

Writing

We have been focusing on traditional tales with a focus on Hansel and Gretel by Michael Morpurgo.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So far, we have written a character description about the Witch and we are currently working on a rhyming poem that includes figurative language.

Maths

We have been looking at the properties of shape, angles, plotting co-ordinates and translation of shapes. Coming up very soon will be measurement including decimals and converting between imperial and metric units.

Reading

We have been continuing to look at traditional tales and been using Michael Morpurgo's greatest magical stories to look at similarities in the themes and convention between these stories.
