Geography Intent

At Springwood Federation, our intent is to equip pupils with the geographical knowledge, skills, and vocabulary necessary to develop a deep understanding and fascination with the world around them and their place within it. We aim to nurture curious, informed, and responsible global citizens who appreciate the diversity of places and people.

Our curriculum ensures pupils progressively develop:

  • Locational knowledge to confidently identify countries, continents, and key physical features.
  • Understanding of human and physical geography, including processes and patterns.
  • Geographical skills and fieldwork techniques to observe, measure, and interpret the environment.
  • Place knowledge through comparative studies of a range of countries and regions.

Pupils explore diverse locations such as France, the United States, Australia, Ivory Coast, the United Kingdom, and Nepal, gaining a broad and balanced perspective of the world.

Geography Implementation

Our geography curriculum follows a carefully sequenced long-term plan that integrates the four key strands: locational knowledge, human and physical geography, geographical skills and fieldwork, and place knowledge.

We implement this through:

  • Medium-term plans that provide detailed units of study with clear learning objectives and vocabulary.
  • Use of maps, atlases, globes, and digital tools to develop spatial awareness and locational skills.
  • Fieldwork opportunities and practical activities that develop observational and enquiry skills.
  • Comparative studies of contrasting places to build understanding of global diversity and interdependence.
  • Integration of geography with other curriculum areas to enrich learning and relevance.
  • Differentiated tasks and scaffolding to support all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Regular assessment and feedback to monitor progress and inform teaching.

Geography Impact

As a result of our intent and implementation:

  • Pupils demonstrate a secure and growing knowledge of geographical concepts and vocabulary.
  • They apply geographical skills confidently, including map reading, data collection, and analysis.
  • Pupils show curiosity and respect for different places and cultures, understanding their own place in the world.
  • Attainment in geography reflects strong progress for all pupils, including SEND and disadvantaged groups.
  • Subject leaders and governors monitor curriculum delivery and pupil outcomes to ensure high standards and continuous improvement.
  • Pupils are prepared to engage with geographical issues and challenges in their future education and as active global citizens.
