    Intent

At Springwood Federation, our computing curriculum aims to develop children’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the exploration of digital technology. We encourage pupils to hypothesise, test, analyse and draw conclusions, enabling them to apply their existing knowledge across a range of digital platforms.

Our goal is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Through our curriculum, children develop a strong foundation in computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils learn how technology works, how it can be used creatively and responsibly, and how it can help them solve problems and communicate effectively.

We aim for all children to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology who understand how to stay safe online and recognise the importance of digital citizenship.

    Implementation

As a federation, we use the Kapow Primary scheme of learning to support the delivery of our computing curriculum. This provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Key Stage 2 and ensures coverage of the National Curriculum.

Lessons are structured to allow children to build on prior knowledge while developing new skills in computing. Pupils explore key areas such as computer systems and networks, programming, data handling, digital media and online safety. Through practical activities and collaborative learning, children gain hands-on experience using a variety of digital tools and technologies.

    Our curriculum enables children to:

    • understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation

    • analyse problems in computational terms and gain repeated practical experience of writing computer programs to solve them

    • evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, to solve problems

    • develop the knowledge and skills needed to become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

Online safety is embedded throughout the curriculum so that children understand how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

    Impact

Through our computing curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to confidently use technology in a range of contexts. Children become logical thinkers who are able to analyse problems, design solutions and evaluate their outcomes.

Pupils leave Springwood Federation with a secure understanding of key computing concepts, the ability to apply computational thinking and the confidence to use technology creatively and safely. They are well prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped with the digital skills necessary for life in the modern world.
