History Intent

At Springwood Federation, our intent is to inspire curiosity and a passion for history by encouraging pupils to ask perceptive questions about the past. We aim to develop a secure chronological understanding of key events and periods, enabling pupils to think critically by weighing arguments and evaluating historical sources based on reason and evidence. Pupils will learn to make meaningful comparisons between then and now, understanding the significance of historical events and their lasting impact on the world today.

Our curriculum fosters a sense of identity and cultural awareness, helping pupils appreciate the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, and the diversity of societies over time.

History Implementation

Our history curriculum follows the National Curriculum for England and is carefully sequenced to provide coherent narratives within and across historical periods. Implementation includes:

  • Medium-term plans that balance overview and depth studies, covering British, local, and world history.
  • Teaching key historical concepts such as chronology, cause and consequence, change and continuity, significance, and interpretation.
  • Use of a wide range of historical sources, including artefacts, documents, and eyewitness accounts, to develop enquiry skills.
  • Opportunities for pupils to engage in historical enquiry, formulating questions, analysing evidence, and constructing reasoned arguments.
  • Local history studies and thematic units to connect pupils’ learning to their own community and the wider world.
  • Differentiated teaching and scaffolding to support all learners, including SEND pupils.
  • Regular formative assessment to monitor progress and inform planning.

History Impact

As a result of our intent and implementation:

  • Pupils develop a strong chronological understanding and can place events and periods in context.
  • They demonstrate critical thinking skills by evaluating sources and interpretations of history.
  • Pupils show curiosity, respect, and empathy for people in the past and make connections to the present.
  • Attainment and progress in history meet or exceed national expectations across all pupil groups.
  • Subject leaders and governors monitor curriculum delivery and pupil outcomes to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Pupils are well-prepared for secondary education with a solid foundation in historical knowledge and enquiry skills.
