Phonics Support

Phonics is one of the most important areas of learning within a Year 1 classroom and for home learning. It is an essential building block to helping children learn to read and understand the complications of the English language.

Below, you'll find links and explanations for a variety of resources to support phonics learning at home.

If you would like any further advice, please ask.

Above, you'll find some of the phonics checks from previous years. These are good for occasional practise.

Please note, that due to COVID, there was no new phonics check materials in 2020 or 2021.

Oxford Phonics Screening Check generator

Above you'll find a free website to generate practise phonics checks in the style of the government supplied checks. These are useful for practising a few words a days, to print off and play games like snap/pairs with, or to highlight key graphemes.

Phonics Background

On the above link, you'll find useful information about:

  • What phonics is and why we teach it.
  • What we mean by "Phases" (the order in which we teach sounds).
  • How the sounds should be pronounced- this is very important as we emphasise "pure" sounds over how many of us adults were taught. There is a very helpful video.
  • What blending is and how to support the process.

Phonics Glossary

On the above link, you'll find a glossary of some of the terminology teachers use when we talk about phonics. We use this terminology while we're teaching.

If you'd like to go through this is more detail, do let us know and we'd be happy to help!
