Science

Most plants begin life beneath the ground.  They grow from seeds, which drop into the soil.  There is a way you can see what happens out of sight under ground. A bean is the seed of a plant.  You can grow it in a glass jar, where you can see it clearly…     Why not investigate how the roots grow?

We would also love to see any other plants/ vegetables that you have spent time growing so far this summer 

Science

Make a tin drum and a tom-tom.

They make different kinds of sounds, but they work in the same way.  When you hit a drum’s stretched skin, it vibrates.  This makes the air inside the drum vibrate – and out comes the sound.

Using the differentiation grid … find your challenge!

This week's theme: At the end of the rainbow

Below is a list of useful websites and resources to keep you busy when your are not doing the Bingo Homelearning or enjoying time together. They are all free and most do not require any registration.

On Monday, a themed week of activities will be uploaded to this page alongside Maths, English and active challenges.

Year 3 Home Learning Bingo

Here are some ideas for things you can do at home.

Every time you do one of these challenges cross it off on the bingo card.

Can you fill in the whole bingo card?

Build a round house using something you have from home (lego, blocks, playing cards).

Tell someone at home what you have built.

  • Measure it.

  • Draw a picture and label it.

Find different clocks around the house.  Read the time, is it am or pm?  Make up time problems by making it later than or earlier than the time shown.  Write the new times.

Share a book with someone from home.  Join borrowbox the online library book service.  Phone the library to get a pin.

Talk about what you like about the book.

What would you change about the story?

Help someone in the kitchen with some cooking or baking.

  • Help to measure the ingredients.

  • Help to tidy and wash up at the end.

  • Design a healthy sandwich.  Write instructions of how to make it.  Photograph it and enjoy eating it.

Look out the window and talk about what you can see.

Weather

Objects

People

Draw signs of spring, consider how the plants seen have reproduced.  Draw the seeds, record a diary of how plants change every few days.

Make a T table for each of the times tables.  Practice them in order, out of order.  Play T T rockstars.

Make timetable stories, eg: there were 4 bananas and they were 7p each how much would 8 bananas cost?

Use a tape measure to measure objects from around the home.   Estimate length, measure, work out the perimeter of every day items.  Books, rugs, placemats.

Use your imagination to create a picture of a coast.  Include as many natural features as you can.  Stacks, stumps, bays, caves, arches, hills, cliffs, spit, headland, beach. etc

Play a board game with someone at home.

Practice adding and subtracting.  Design your own race across the beach game.  Write the rules.

Make a pretend shop.  Make price labels.  Write shopping lists, offer labels, and receipts.  Make totals with different shopping baskets, show your workings on an empty number line.  Check your calculations with a calculator.

Write a story about the adventures of Trevor the venus fly trap and his best friend Floss.  Where do they go? What do they do?  What goes wrong?  How do they resolve the problem?  Plan it first! Use a dictionary.

Keep a diary of your thoughts.  Make a feelings graph.  Record how you feel and why. Look in a mirror, draw a self portrait.

Roman Jewellery - clay modelling.

Year 3 had a wonderful time designing and creating their own Roman jewellery. First, we looked at some examples of jewellery worn at the time and then set about designing our own version. We then brought our ideas to life! Using different techniques such as rolling, kneading and pressing tools to make an impression, we created our designs. The children were justifiably proud of the final results.

Explorer Dome - Water

We were very lucky to have the Explorer Dome experience in school where science is brought to life. The children were taken into a giant dome and learnt about the three different states of matter that H2O can be found in. We found out that water contains 16 different chemicals and minerals that come from natural springs in the ground. We developed our understanding of the water cycle and how dirty water can be recycled and cleaned and therefore suitable for human consumption. The man was also able to freeze his breath which was incredible.

Rivers

In both our topic and guided reading lessons, we have been developing our knowledge of rivers. We have learnt how rivers start, how a spring forms and how rivers, at the end, flow into the sea. We have learnt about drainage areas, that a stream or river that joins a larger river is called a tributary and how rivers change the landscape. Through this, we have furthered our scientific knowledge of erosion (wearing away soil and rock particles), transportation (material carried by the river) and deposition (when the river deposits or drops the material it is carrying like silt or sand).
